Our History

Matters of Law is the flagship creation of a team of visionary attorneys from Firm Innovations Technologies, Inc. Before Matters of Law, virtually every attorney saw advantages in electronic (paperless) files, yet they struggled to fully adopt the process because no existing software operated the way that lawyers functioned. Law firms purchased dozens of software licenses and cobbled together various disparate software apps (word processing, calendaring, billing, filing, document review, trial presentation, spreadsheet, scanning, redacting, etc.) to create a cumbersome process that offered only limited advantages over paper files. Larger firms often purchased specialized (increasingly expensive) software to get an extra edge.

Eventually, the cost of legal technology for some firms rivaled the cost of office leases. Even then, specialized software was so unimaginative and cumbersome that the task of learning and using the software was assigned to lower-level attorneys. With senior attorneys and partners unable or unwilling to adapt to the disjointed array of clunky technology, the benefits of technology and automation were never fully realized. Indeed, attorneys with electronic files still printed every relevant document (at least once) for key-document folders, witness binders, and trial notebooks. Thus, while virtually every other industry, from architecture to archaeology, was becoming more efficient with technology and automation, the practice of law was bogged down with an ever-increasing amount of data and no efficient way to manage or access it.

Confident there was another way to unlock the efficiencies of technology, a team of practicing attorneys embarked on a previously unimagined venture—to create a software that functions the way lawyers think. In other words, to create a software that could efficiently store, process, and produce documents and data in a way that is so easy, so inherently intuitive to practicing lawyers, that no lawyer would ever need an owner's manual. To do this, these attorneys sought a team of extremely talented programmers to generate one of the most comprehensive legal databases ever created, coupled with the most intuitive interface imaginable.

But these attorneys refused to relinquish the project to programmers. Every detail in the software—every screen, every button, every task, every function—was envisioned, created, and directed, by the team of lawyers with one objective in mind: reinvent and automate the practice of law. Matters of Law was not created by has-been lawyers who obtained a law degree then turned to tech. In fact, no attorney was allowed to work on the team who was not concurrently practicing as a full-time lawyer. The team painstakingly created, vetted, and revised every facet of Matters of Law to ensure it was the most comprehensive and most simple-to-use legal software ever known.

Various entrepreneurs and well-wishers routinely encouraged the Matters of Law team to make the software more generic, so it can be sold to several different professions, but the team adamantly refused to compromise the uniqueness of the software. As a result, Matters of Law is the first-ever all-inclusive software that was truly created by lawyers for lawyers. It was tailor-made for practicing lawyers, no others.
